Bangkok City Bus
The Bangkok city bus system is an amazing network of routes which will take you anywhere in the Bangkok metropolis. The cost to ride a Bangkok city bus is cheap. It is by far the least expensive form of transport around Bangkok. However, the money you save may not be worth the amount of time spent to ride a Bangkok city bus. Buses are notoriously slow and they often get stuff in Bangkok city traffic. I don't recommend buses for novice travelers in Bangkok. They will save you money on your transportation budget, but it can be very difficult to find the right bus.
If you need to travel to an area of Bangkok that cannot be reached by the Bangkok skytrain or the Bangkok subway, I suggest you find a Bangkok taxi for transportation to your final destination. For those adventurous travelers that want to try their skills on a Bangkok city bus, make sure you have some extra Thai currency in your pocket to pay for a taxi ride if you get hopelessly lost.
Helpful Advice for Using a Bangkok City Bus
Most Bangkok city buses have their destinations written only in Thai. Some buses do have signs in both English and Thai, but these are still in the minority. If you plan to be in Bangkok for several weeks or months, then purchase a bus map from the BMTA and have fun finding your way around town. However, short term visitors should spend their limited time at the many Bangkok attractions instead of sitting at bus stops waiting for the right bus to come along.
