Bangkok Weather

Bangkok weather is not much different from general Thailand weather. Thai people divide Bangkok weather into three seasons, cool season, hot season and rainy season. These are the general classifications for most of Thailand. Cool season runs from November to February. Hot season begins in early March and lasts until mid-May. Rainy season can begin anytime between May and June. Rainy season then lasts until the end of October before the north winds begins to blow in from China which signals the start of cool season.

Bangkok weather does not change as much as the weather in Northern Thailand. The cool, hot and rainy seasons usually feel like hot, hotter and hottest weather to most tourists. If you live here long term like we do, you start to adjust to the heat and cool season really does feel cool. Temperatures here in the North can drop down to 55 F during the winter months and it feels rather cold after rainy season temperatures of 95 F.

Bangkok Airport

Suvarnabhumi airport

Suvarnabhumi is the new Bangkok Interntional Airport. It is located about 25 km. southeast of Bangkok in Samut Prakan province. King Bhumibol or King Rama IX named the airport which means "golden land" but the English spelling is bound to lead to mispronunciations. It is actually pronounced Su-wa-na-poom, inThai. The old airport, Don Muang, had three terminals; one for domestic and two for international.  Suvarnabhumi has only one terminal, but it is the second largest in the world. It handles both international and domestic flights.

In the past, Don Muang International collected 500 baht as a departure tax from out going passengers. The fee has been increased to 700 baht at Suvarnabhumi, but it is now included in the price of the ticket. More information is available at the Bangkok Airport page.

Practical Information

Mobile phones

Mobile phones are everywhere and it is worthwhile to buy a phone when in Thailand or bring your phone from home and activate the international roaming. All mobile phones in Thailand use a ten digit number while landlines have only a nine digit number. New phones can be purchased for as little as $30US. Then you simply put money on your phone account and pay as you go. The store where you buy the phone can explain the way the Thailand phone network functions.

Calling Home

The internet is readily accesible throughout Bangkok and much of Thailand. If you need to call home to stay in touch with your family or job, set up an account with Skype before your arrival in Thailand. Most internet cafes offer broadband access which is sufficient to support VoIP calls. We use Skype on a regular basis when calling to the states from Thailand.
