Chiang Mai Transportation

Chiang Mai transportation is not as modern as the capital city of Bangkok. But it is still easy to find your way around the "Rose of the North" with public transportation. The most fun way to travel around the city is on the infamous tuk tuks. These are the motorized three wheeled vehicles for which Thailand is known. The tuk tuks in Chiang Mai are similar to the Bangkok tuk tuks. If you didn't have a chance to ride one in the capital city, make sure to use a Chiang Mai tuk tuk for some of your Chiang Mai transportation needs.

Of course there are other ways to get around Chiang Mai. Some of the more common modes of transportation are listed below.

Red Trucks or Songthaews

Chiang Mai Bus Service

Chiang Mai Taxis

Chiang Mai has seen an increase in the number of taxis in recent years. There are two companies which now provide Bangkok style taxi cab service. Although most of the taxis have meters, the meters are not used to determine the fare.

The normal fare for a trip in Chiang Mai city is 150 baht. This is an expensive fare when compared to the local bus service of 15 baht. Of course, the bus fare is per person and the taxi fare is per vehicle. The taxi service will be much faster as well.

Trips outside of the city will cost more than 150 baht. Depending on the distance, the fee may be as high as 600 baht. Both companies use the same fare schedule. Although the fees are set, don't be afraid to bargain for a better price. Prices for anything are subject to change in Thailand.
